Course Information

This Flower Harvesting and Handling course is ideal for individuals involved in nursery operations, floristry supply chains, landscaping, and other sectors where the quality and handling of fresh-cut flowers and foliage are critical.

Learners will gain a clear understanding of the tools and equipment used in harvesting, the indicators of flower maturity, and workplace safety protocols. The course also covers procedures for sorting, grading, applying post-harvest treatments, and preparing flowers for transport and storage. Emphasis is placed on real-world application, with hands-on training to ensure learners can carry out harvesting and handling processes with minimal damage and maximum efficiency.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to handle flowers with confidence, apply treatment and coating techniques appropriately, and document harvesting activities accurately to support operational and quality standards in the floriculture industry.

The Flower Handling and Harvesting course is designed to provide learners with the essential knowledge and practical skills required to perform flower harvesting tasks safely, efficiently, and in accordance with industry standards.

After attending the course, learners will be able to:

  • Identify appropriate tools and equipment for flower harvesting and demonstrate their correct use
  • Recognise flower maturity and desired characteristics based on industry and market standards
  • Apply safe and efficient harvesting techniques to minimise damage during cutting, handling, and packing
  • Follow workplace safety and health (WSH) guidelines and use personal protective equipment (PPE) appropriately
  • Handle, store, and transport harvested flowers and foliage to maintain freshness and quality
  • Grade and label flowers and foliage according to species, condition, and market requirements
  • Apply post-harvest treatments and coatings to extend shelf life and enhance product presentation
  • Sort flowers and foliage based on established classification standards
  • Record and report harvesting outcomes accurately using standard documentation procedures
  • At least 18 years old;
  • At least secondary school education;
  • Able to speak, listen and read English at a proficiency level not lower than the Employability Skills Workforce Skills Qualification Workplace Literacy Level (WPL Level 3)
